Statewide Survey Board Awards NCC with Major Archaeological Project to Investigation the Grounds Around the Capitol.
Have you ever been curious about what was on the grounds of the state capitol before it was built? The Statewide Survey Board certainly is and is making an effort to determine what once was, as part of a larger project to add the capitol grounds to the National Register of Historic Places. Ahead of that process, they are endeavoring to look beneath the surface and see into the past where mansions, craftman’s homes, and new immigrants once lived.
The Statewide Survey of Historical and Archaeological Sites is managed by an Oversight Board that includes the Minnesota Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office, Office of the State Archaeologist, and Minnesota Indian Affairs Council. The program is supported by the Legacy Amendment. The Oversight Board has partnered with Nienow Cultural Consultants LLC with its team of archaeologists, historians, geophysical specialists and architectural historians to complete the project.
